Gnaoua and World Music Festival

The Gnaoua and World Music Festival is held annually in Essaouira and is widely regarded as one of the best music festivals in Africa. It has been running since 1998 and draws upwards of 400,000 visitors over its three-day duration. The 2026 edition takes place from 25 to 27 June.

The festival centres on Gnaoua music, a spiritual tradition brought to Morocco by sub-Saharan Africans who arrived centuries ago, many as enslaved people. Gnaoua rituals originally served a healing function, combining music, trance, and ceremonial dress. Today the tradition is recognised as an important part of Morocco’s intangible cultural heritage, and the Essaouira festival is its most visible international platform. The lead practitioners are known as maalems, and the 2026 edition will feature 42 of them performing across the festival’s venues.

Venues and Format

The main stage is Place Moulay Hassan, Essaouira’s central square, which fills with tens of thousands of people on peak evenings. A secondary beach stage sits at the edge of the Atlantic and is one of the more atmospheric settings: open air, wind-blown, with the sound carrying across the dunes. Smaller riad and courtyard performances take place inside the medina throughout the festival, offering a more intimate alternative to the large-stage concerts.

Getting to Essaouira from Taghazout

Essaouira is approximately 180km north of Taghazout, a journey of around 2.5 to 3 hours by road depending on traffic. During the festival weekend, both CTM buses and shared grand taxis operate routes from Agadir to Essaouira. CTM buses depart from Agadir’s main bus station and cost approximately 80-110 MAD one way. Driving or hiring a taxi is faster if you are travelling as a small group.

Accommodation in Essaouira books out quickly for the festival weekend. Many visitors choose to stay in Agadir or along the Taghazout coast and travel in for the day or evening, which is entirely feasible given the road connections.

What to Bring

Essaouira is famously windy, earning it the nickname “City of the Wind”. Even in late June, the evening sea breeze can be strong and cool. Bring a layer you can put on after dark. Comfortable shoes are essential if you plan to move between the beach stage, Place Moulay Hassan, and the medina alleys in the same evening.

The medina is largely pedestrianised, so navigating between venues on foot is straightforward once you have your bearings. Arrive early for headline acts if you want a position near the front of Place Moulay Hassan.
