Agadir Half Marathon - Argan Tree Race

The Agadir Half Marathon, branded as the Argan Tree Race, is one of Morocco’s most scenic certified road races. It takes its name from the argan tree, an ancient and economically vital species native to the Souss-Massa region that surrounds Agadir. The event carries an eco-conscious identity, with organisers committed to minimising waste and promoting awareness of the argan forest ecosystem, which holds UNESCO status as a biosphere reserve.

The Course

The race offers two distances: a full 21km half-marathon and a 10km fun run, making it accessible to competitive runners and casual participants alike. The course runs along the Atlantic coastline and through parts of Agadir’s beach promenade, giving runners a rare chance to see the bay and the city’s distinctive hilltop Kasbah from the road. The flat terrain makes this one of Morocco’s faster certified courses, and several participants have recorded personal bests here. Exact elevation gain is minimal, with only gentle inclines inland.

Start time is typically in the early morning to take advantage of cooler temperatures. In May, Agadir sits in a transitional period before the summer heat arrives, with average morning temperatures around 18-20°C at race time.

What to Expect on Race Day

Registration and bib collection usually take place at a dedicated expo or sports facility in central Agadir the day before the race. The atmosphere is friendly and international, with participants travelling from across Morocco, France, Spain, and further afield. Water stations appear every 2.5km along the route, and there are medical teams at regular intervals.

The finish line area typically includes live music, refreshments, and a medal ceremony. Argan oil products often feature among the prize and goodie bag items, which is a fitting local touch.

Agadir is around 20 minutes by road from Taghazout, making it straightforward to base yourself in the surf village and travel in on race morning. Tips for Visitors

Arrive in Agadir at least a day before the race to collect your bib and allow time to rest.
