Marrakech Day Trip from Taghazout: How to Do It

Marrakech is 300 kilometres from Taghazout - not around the corner, but close enough for a day trip that actually works if you plan it right. The city is a different Morocco from the surf coast: loud, layered, overwhelming in the best way. A day there and back is tiring, but most people find it worth it.

Here’s how to make the logistics work and what to do when you arrive.

Getting There

By Car (Best Option)

The drive from Taghazout to Marrakech is straightforward on the A7 motorway. Allow 2.5–3 hours from Taghazout, including the exit from the coast through Agadir.

Route: Taghazout north to Agadir, then join the A7 motorway east toward Marrakech. The motorway crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka area via tunnel and continues to Marrakech. Road surface is excellent throughout.

Toll cost: Approximately 90–120 MAD each way on the A7 (multiple toll booths - have cash ready).

Parking in Marrakech: Drive into the new city (Guéliz) and park near Avenue Mohammed V - easier than the medina. Official guarded car parks (parking gardienné) cost approximately 10–20 MAD per hour. The medina streets are largely inaccessible by car.

Leave Taghazout by 7am to be in Marrakech by 10am. Aim to leave Marrakech by 4–5pm to be back before dark.

A hire car gives you the flexibility to leave and return on your own schedule, which makes the day significantly easier to manage.

By Bus (Budget Option)

The connection: There is no direct bus from Taghazout to Marrakech. You need to get to Agadir first, then take a long-distance bus from there.

Step 1 - Taghazout to Agadir: Take a shared grand taxi from Taghazout south to Inezgane (30–40 min, approximately 10–15 MAD per person). From Inezgane, a short petit taxi or grand taxi to the Agadir CTM station or bus gare routière costs 15–25 MAD.

Step 2 - Agadir to Marrakech by CTM:

• CTM Agadir departures: approximately 07:30, 10:00, 14:00, 20:00 daily (schedules vary - verify at ctm.ma)
• Journey time: 3.5–4 hours
• Price: approximately 100–130 MAD per person
• Book online at ctm.ma or at the Agadir station

Step 2 alternative - Supratours:

• Supratours runs a similar service from the Agadir train station area
• Price: approximately 90–120 MAD per person
• Book at supratours.ma or at the station

Arrival: Both services drop in the new Marrakech city (Guéliz/bus station area). From there, petit taxis to the medina cost 20–30 MAD.

Total journey Taghazout to Marrakech medina by bus: 4.5–5.5 hours.

For a day trip by bus, take the earliest morning departure from Agadir (07:30 CTM) and the 17:00 or 18:00 return. This gives you roughly 5 hours in Marrakech - tight, but workable if you focus on one or two areas rather than trying to see everything.

Organised Day Trip

Tour operators in Taghazout and Agadir run Marrakech day trips with minibus transport and a guide. Prices run from 300–500 MAD per person, often including entrance fees to one or two sights. Book through your surf camp or guesthouse, or at tour operator offices along the main road through Taghazout.

One Day in Marrakech

Five or six hours is not enough to do Marrakech properly - but it’s enough to see the core of it. The key is not to try to cover everything.

Jemaa el-Fna

The central square of the medina. By day it’s market stalls, orange juice sellers (5–10 MAD per glass), and snake charmers. By late afternoon and evening it becomes one of the great spectacles of North Africa - food stalls, musicians, storytellers, acrobats. If you’re arriving mid-morning, walk through and come back in the evening before you head to dinner.

Tip: The orange juice vendors on the square charge 10–15 MAD - the adjacent stalls just off the square often charge less for the same quality.

Ben Youssef Madrasa

A 14th-century Quranic school, reopened as a museum. The interior courtyard - carved cedar wood, zellige tilework, a central pool - is one of the most photographed spaces in Morocco. Entry approximately 70 MAD as of 2026 (prices subject to change). Allocate 45–60 minutes.

Location: 5 minutes’ walk north from Jemaa el-Fna into the medina. Signposted.

The Souks

The medina souk network is dense and deliberately disorienting - that’s part of the experience. The main tourist souk (Souk Semmarine) runs north from Jemaa el-Fna and branches into specialist areas: leather (Souk Cherratin), dyers (Souk des Teinturiers), spice market, jewellery. Allow 1.5–2 hours to wander without a specific destination.

Buying: Negotiation is standard on most craft items. Starting price is typically 2–3x the seller’s actual minimum. Take your time, walk away if the price isn’t right.

Bahia Palace

A 19th-century vizier’s palace on the eastern edge of the medina. 8 hectares of Andalusian garden, painted wooden ceilings, and tiled reception rooms. Entry approximately 70 MAD as of 2026. Allow 45–60 minutes. Less crowded than Ben Youssef Madrasa.

Location: About 10 minutes’ walk southeast of Jemaa el-Fna.

Majorelle Garden

The blue-painted garden designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s, now owned by the Yves Saint Laurent estate. Entry approximately 150–200 MAD (garden + Berber museum). Beautiful in the morning light; gets crowded by 11am. Located in the new city (Guéliz), not in the medina - 15 minutes by petit taxi from Jemaa el-Fna.

If you only have 5 hours: Skip Majorelle and stay in the medina. The garden deserves a leisurely morning visit, which a day trip doesn’t really allow.

Lunch

The restaurants around Jemaa el-Fna targeting tourists charge 80–150 MAD for a set menu with tagine. For better quality and value, head one street back from the square.

Café de France (on Jemaa el-Fna, upper floor) - basic but good for watching the square from above with a mint tea (15–20 MAD).

Souk Ahl Fas area - a cluster of local workers’ restaurants serving harira soup (10–15 MAD), brochettes, and msemen (flatbread). Follow your nose.

Le Jardin (33 Souk El Jeld, Sidi Abdelaziz) - a garden restaurant in a restored riad. More expensive (150–220 MAD for a main), but the courtyard is worth it for a longer lunch break. Reservations recommended in peak season.

When to Go

October to April is the best window. Weather in Marrakech is warm rather than hot - daytime temperatures of 20–28°C, very walkable. The medina is busy year-round but not oppressively crowded outside of Christmas and Easter.

June to August: Marrakech reaches 38–42°C in peak summer. Walking the medina at midday is exhausting. If you’re based in Taghazout in summer and want to visit Marrakech, go very early in the morning and spend midday in a cafe or garden.

Ramadan: The medina atmosphere changes during Ramadan - restaurants close during the day, the pace of the souks slows, and the Jemaa el-Fna becomes particularly atmospheric after iftar (sunset). Worth experiencing, but plan meals around iftar timing.
